Welcome to Northern Star Therapy!

Hello and welcome! We're so glad you're here. Whether you're here out of concern or curiosity about your child’s communication skills, we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to support your family. At Northern Star Therapy, we understand that every child is unique, and we’re committed to providing personalized, compassionate care to help children thrive in their communication skills.

In this blog post, we’ll walk you through what you can expect during an Initial Speech and Language Evaluation with a pediatric speech-language pathologist (SLP) in our practice. This assessment is an important first step in understanding your child’s strengths and challenges related to speech, language, communication, and feeding.

What is an Initial Speech and Language Evaluation?

An initial evaluation is a comprehensive assessment conducted by a licensed pediatric speech-language pathologist. This process helps identify any speech, language, social communication, or feeding issues that may be affecting your child’s development.

Why is an Evaluation Important?

Early identification is key when it comes to speech and language challenges. Speech and language skills form the foundation for reading, writing, social interaction, and overall academic success. Whether your child is experiencing delays or has a specific communication difficulty, a thorough evaluation helps us create a targeted plan to support their growth.

What to Expect During the Evaluation

  1. Initial Consultation and Parent Interview The first part of the evaluation involves meeting with you, the parent or caregiver, to learn more about your child’s developmental history, milestones, and any concerns you may have. We’ll discuss your child’s medical history, family background, social environment, and specific areas of concern. This step is essential in understanding the bigger picture and provides valuable context for the evaluation.

  2. Speech and Language Assessment The core of the evaluation is the formal assessment. Depending on your child's age and specific concerns, we may use a combination of standardized tests, informal observations, and interactive activities. This helps us assess a range of skills, including:

    • Articulation (the clarity of speech sounds)

    • Receptive language (understanding spoken language)

    • Expressive language (using words and sentences to communicate)

    • Social communication (turn-taking, eye contact, and conversational skills)

    • Voice and fluency (quality of voice, stuttering)

    • Feeding and swallowing (if relevant to the child’s needs)

  3. Play and Interaction For younger children, play-based assessment is a key component. We observe how your child communicates through play, which provides us with insights into their ability to engage with others, use gestures, follow directions, and more. It’s a fun and natural way for children to demonstrate their skills!

  4. Results and Recommendations After the evaluation is complete, we’ll review our findings and discuss the results with you. If any areas of concern are identified, we’ll explain them in detail, answer any questions you have, and work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan. This may include therapy goals, frequency of sessions, and any home strategies to support your child’s development.

What Happens After the Evaluation?

Based on the results of the evaluation, we will recommend next steps. For some children, this might involve starting therapy right away to address any areas of concern. In other cases, we may suggest monitoring your child’s progress over time or offering additional referrals to other specialists if needed. Our parent coaching may be a great first step.

If therapy is recommended, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss scheduling and how we will work together to support your child’s progress. Our goal is always to empower you as a parent and provide practical tools to help your child communicate confidently and effectively.
