Don’t get me wrong, I love fresh starts. But August always feels like a month full of change. Even as an adult, I notice it. My schedule shifts. Summer activities come to an end, and new routines begin. Even if they can’t explain it, they often feel it. One thing I think we sometimes forget is that children don’t experience time the same way adults do. We know school starts in a couple of weeks. We know bedtime is changing because school is around the corner. Young children don’t connect all of those dots. They simply notice that life suddenly feels different. That’s why one of the best things we can do is begin talking about those changes before they happen. Let your child know what mornings will look like. Talk about bedtime. Explain where everyone will be during the day.
